Less than an hour of flight from Gatwick Airport meant that you may spend more time in traffic from home to airport or at the airport itself rather than on air. Having reached in late Friday afternoon, we did not waste any time to dump our luggage in the nicely located Hotel Carlton which was just next to the main railway station of Luxembourg City and then we headed straight towards the much famous town centre. Just a short 10 minute walk from the hotel, the landscape of the city became very clear.

The Alzette and Pétrusse rivers made sure that the gorges were cut in such a steep way leading to the city having two levels – the Ville Haute or the Upper City and the lower city called the Grund. The two-levelled city structure was so uncommon that you will not see it anywhere else.

If you are visiting the Luxembourg city for the first time like we did, grab a leaflet and start a city promenade on your own. We crossed the bridge and entered the main city centre being welcomed by the National Monument of Solidarity, where the eternal flame continued to glow to remember those who laid down their lives for this country during World Wars. A few steps from there it was the beautiful sighting of the Gelle Fra, the famous Golden Lady statue standing high to remember the fallen heroes of Luxembourg who fought in the World War I.

Flanked by the three summits of the Notre Dame Cathedral on the other side, the city assured visitors of the vicinity of its key attractions. Such was the case that we headed towards the Place d’Armes, walking beneath the artistic installation of the endless swings in the sky. Studded with countless eateries and performances, albeit a small in size but with no shortage of vibe and charm in the Place d’Armes, supposedly the heart of the City of Luxembourg. We had a nice dinner right at the heart of this happening square and walked back to conclude the first few hours of our Lux-venture!

Having a good night sleep on day one meant that we were up early for explorations of the City of Luxembourg on a Saturday morning to see the most important historic sites and find out why the city was called “Gibraltar of the North”. The short little walk brought us to the eventful Place Guillaume II where tourists, traders and locals were pouring in. Walking is the best way to discover this city and so did we. The Grand Ducal Palace was just round the corner but we did not venture into it primarily because of the fact that only guided tours were available and the one with English was much later in the day. Hence we moved on through the many alleys of the city centre until we arrived at the much adored Casemate du Bock.

The mind-boggling defence architecture built around and inside the naturally rocky formations kept the city protected from foreign invasions for centuries. The exit from Casemate du Bock led us to the wonderful Chemin de la Corniche, dubbed as the “most beautiful balcony in Europe” – a lovely promenade on the side of the city rampant walls offering a breathe-taking view of the Lower Ville. We walked along this route to immerse ourselves deeper into the quaint alleys and architecture of the historic Old Town. We took an elevator which brought us up to the Upper Town and we thought to try out the chocolate delicacies of Luxembourg at the very famous Chocolate Line, just opposite the Grand Ducal Palace. Finally post-dinner open air cinema made the day come to a wonderful end. The perks of visiting Luxembourg between June to September- they have an open air summer campaign in the city of Luxembourg with free concerts at the Place d’Armes and the Place Guillaume II, “Fête de la Musique” (music festivals), Street art festival, open air cinema, markets and feasts, exhibitions and folklore, sports (Gala Tour de France), and much more. It is well worth planning your visit accordingly.

A picturesque village along the Ours river, the location is a jewel hidden in the northern part of Luxembourg. An adventurous chair-lift brings visitors from ground level up to the mountain top where the 10th century Vianden Castle dominates the skyline. The castle is also ofcourse reachable by car but those going via chair-lift had to undergo a rocky and uneven mountain trail to get to the castle and return. Given all else being in place, we were wondering why no care was taken in making this approach more convenient for visitors coming via chair-lifts.

We were spoiled, as in addition to the traditional attractions of the town, we also experienced La fête médiévale au Château de Vianden (the Medieval Castle Festival Vianden) that was taking place inside the Vianden Castle on that day which meant there were performances, craftsmen, fair, food and festivity inside the castle. Performers in traditional medieval costumes blended so naturally well with the surroundings that we felt as if we were transported back in time. The sound, sight and smell all around were just ideal to bring forth the medieval flavour. Not to mention the gorgeous view of the town below and the stretched landscape far away added to the experience.
