Hawaii ticked off from the bucket list. Beach holiday of 2015 is done and dusted. Even a week before, I was in the process of unpacking from my beach getaway and now I have all my focus on the skin. Yes, even after a month, my body looks like 50 Shades of Tan;) For the record, I get tanned faster than DHL delivers your parcel. After all, for Londoners, it’s been months since we had been in the sun which is to say that a dozen days at high sea may be as much of a shock to our bodies as it will be to our psyches. And even those with the best of intentions—think diligent layers of SPF 50 and a wide-brimmed hat—may find that powerful UV rays are a formidable adversary. For those of us who got ourselves burnt, after-sun care is an absolute must.
Most dermatologists recommend taking an aspirin or anti-inflammatory as soon as possible after the first signs of pain or redness and following up with cold compresses soaked in milk. After a week of my return, my burnt skin started shedding off which is even horrible to look at. Moisturizing the area regularly helps to speed recovery—and I’m happy to report that, thanks to a wave of advanced repair creams, gels, balms, and liquids, reducing redness has never felt more luxe. I have a few moisturing body lotions from different brands that I keep handy- one in my work bag, one next to my coffee table(in case I need while watching TV at night), one on my dressing table and a couple in the powder room. Some has Vitamin E, others contain essential skin nourishing ingredients, so why use one, eh? I have been using them all at different times of the day on my sunburnt flaky skin post Hawaii holiday.
The modern beach bag, for example, would be incomplete without a restorative spray: I carried with me the Claudalie face mist to Hawaii, it was as welcome as a midday refresher as it is for a remedy for dehydration, and discomfort of wearing make-up in hot weather. I also relied a lot on aloe vera gel. Any brand would do or you can apply the natural one if you can. Just make sure its 100% pure for example this drugstore purchase of mine – a passion for natural Aloe Vera Gel. Another useful product I found to lighten up spots gained from sun damage is Vichy Normaderm Hyaluspot Cream, it is the fast acting cream to help tackle imperfection prone skin and for fast acting targeted spot care. When it comes to peeling prevention, use an after sun rescue balm is so richly hydrating, you may be tempted to substitute it for your daily body moisturizer. And tapping into a longtime Greek remedy for sunburn, I am sharing my homemade recipe to comfort sun-stung shoulders, cheeks, and limbs with these following ingredients:
To lighten spots and repair the discoloration of skin from sun damage, mix the juice of 1 lemon, 1 lime, 2 tablespoons of honey, and 2 ounces of plain yoghurt. Massage in skin, leave it for 15-20 minutes and wash yourself. Re-apply every week at least once. Results are expected to be seen after 4 weeks. If you apply more than once a week, the recovery will be faster than expected.
