This post was meant to be short and sweet, I was simply going to share with you a look I sported during my last holiday in Hawaii. One which will have me wearing a summer dress styled with an over-sized floppy hat. Yes, this post is going to be a visual ode to summer styles as it’s befitting for a brunch with your girlfriends or a day-out picnicking with your family or even for a shopping trip to the farmer’s market.
While conceptualizing the looks I was going to sport in Hawaii holiday, I found myself browsing ASOS with a mission of finding something that I can wear for the journey made between hotel and beaches. In fact my eye was drawn to lots of beautiful pieces and I started ‘saving’ away- only to notice a recurring theme…A skater dress. Completely swoon by this alleged merging of pretty, floaty, feminine frocks and turns out it’s a TREND!
Also known as the ‘fit and flare’ dress, the Skater Dress is apparently ”reminiscent of the outfits worn by female figure skaters”, combining playful hemlines and flowy fabrics to create a beautiful feminine silhouette. Fitted on top, nipped in at the waist and floaty at the skirt, they give you illusion of an hour-glass figure and I LOVE them.
Knowing my body shape and personal style, I realise it’s a style I’m drawn to again and again as the high waist and tad short floaty skirt combo makes my legs look longer, whilst the bardot neckline goes some way to a shoulder-show-off which is flattering for ladies blessed with broad shoulder.
I was drawn to this green, black and white ASOS dress which looked youthful and sexy in a playful way whilst being going-to-the-beach appropriate and intrinsically feminine at the same time.
To style this skater dress, I have added a quintessential summer accessory to this look- a wide-brimmed straw hat as it looks amazing at the beach. Bonus: it gives you extra protection from the sun while framing the face. There are a TON of different options and tricks for successfully wearing a floppy hat. I have almost half a dozen hats in my collection as I love how it instantly perk up an outfit especially on bad hair days. From different colors, textures, shapes and adornments, there’s a floppy hat suitable for literally everyone and every style. I particularly like the diamond weave on this hat as it’s something rarely seen yet capable of making a bold statement.
Top tip: Floppy hat looks best when wearing with your hair open.
A pair of dramatic wedges with a cobalt blue satin bow is added to throw some more colors to this look. Carrying this black & silver Eat Sleep Tan Repeat perspex beach bag with this dress worked as double-duty as it was spacious enough to easily carry my beach essentials keeping the style quotient intact, plus they were basically the then state of mind.
